Good buoyancy is the skill that separates relaxed divers from those fighting the water. It's also heavily tested — and it comes down to a few simple ideas working together.
Positive, negative, neutral
Buoyancy has three states. Positive means you float, negative means you sink, and neutral means you hover effortlessly at a set depth — the goal of every dive. You control which state you're in by managing how much water you displace versus how much you weigh, using your weights, your BCD and your breathing.
Get your weighting right first
Everything starts with correct weighting: enough to descend comfortably, but no more. The classic check is at the surface with a near-empty tank and no air in your BCD — you should float roughly at eye level and sink slowly as you exhale. Overweighting is by far the most common problem; it forces you to carry extra air in your BCD, which makes you harder to control, not easier.
Your BCD fine-tunes, it doesn't lift
Add and dump air in small amounts, and anticipate depth changes rather than reacting to them. Remember Boyle's Law: as you descend, your wetsuit's air bubbles compress, so you lose buoyancy and tend to sink faster — add a little air. On the way up that air expands and you gain buoyancy — vent early so you don't rocket to the surface.
Breathing is your instant trim control
Your lungs are a buoyancy device you're already wearing. A slow, full breath makes you rise slightly; a long exhale makes you settle. Relaxed, rhythmic breathing keeps you hovering and doubles as the finest buoyancy adjustment you have — far quicker than reaching for the BCD.
